How to compare FX quotes in South Africa: rates and fees
Compare exchange rates and fees on the same basis. Worked ZAR-to-USD examples show a fixed budget, a fixed recipient amount and the total payment cost.

Choose what stays fixed before comparing quotes
To compare foreign-exchange quotes, start with the same currency pair, payment direction, quote time and payment method. Confirm the quote expiry and whether the amount shown includes fees. A rate alone does not tell you the total cost of an international transfer.
Choose one comparison basis. With a fixed rand budget, compare how much foreign currency is expected to reach the recipient. With a fixed recipient amount, compare the full rand debit needed to deliver that amount. These answer different questions, so do not compare one provider’s conversion-only amount with another provider’s total debit.
Fixed budget: compare the expected recipient amount
Assume a synthetic total budget of R18,750, with all charges known and no downstream deductions. Quote A charges R250 and converts the remaining R18,500 at 18.50 ZAR per USD, delivering USD 1,000. Quote B charges R100 and converts the remaining R18,650 at 18.60 ZAR per USD, delivering about USD 1,002.69 after rounding.
Quote A has the lower rand-per-dollar rate, but Quote B delivers more dollars from this same total budget because its separate fee is smaller. This conclusion applies only to these illustrative inputs. Ask each provider to confirm its actual rounding, payment route and expected recipient amount.
Fixed recipient amount: compare the full sender debit
Now change the question: the recipient must receive USD 1,000. With the same synthetic rates and fees, Quote A requires R18,500 for conversion plus R250, a total debit of R18,750. Quote B requires R18,600 plus R100, a total debit of R18,700. The difference is R50 for the same recipient amount.
Do not subtract that R50 from a fixed-budget recipient comparison: the two exercises hold different amounts fixed. If a receiving or intermediary charge is not included or guaranteed, record it as unknown. A quote with an unknown deduction cannot promise the same delivered amount as one with all deductions accounted for.
A checklist for a like-for-like written quote
Request the total sender debit, conversion amount, rate and units, each disclosed fee and its currency, expected recipient amount, payment route, charge arrangement and expiry time. Check whether fees are added to the debit or taken from the amount being converted. Keep both quotes from a similar time because rates can move.
A no-transfer-fee offer can still contain an exchange-rate margin. A mid-market rate is a reference, not a guaranteed executable customer quote. Use it to understand the rate component while comparing actual provider quotes on the same basis. This guide does not rank providers or quote current tariffs.
Keep a future quote separate from a completed-payment check
Before paying, use the written-quote checklist above. After a payment is completed, use its final confirmation to review what was recorded. FX Fee Finder checks completed outward or inward ZAR payments using the supplied amounts, payment timing and confirmed fee; it is not a live provider-quote comparison service.
An estimate from a completed payment does not establish which price another provider would have offered at that time. Keep the original quotes and final confirmation separate so you can ask specific questions about changed rates, fees or recipient amounts.
Two synthetic quotes, compared on two separate bases
Illustration only. Fees are in ZAR and deducted from the fixed budget before conversion. Rates are ZAR per USD; downstream deductions are assumed absent. Recipient amounts are rounded to two decimals.
| Confirmation line | Example | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Shared ZAR budget | R18,750 | Fixed-budget comparison: use the same full sender debit. |
| Quote A transfer fee | R250 | Leaves R18,500 to convert from the shared budget. |
| Quote A rate | 18.50 ZAR per USD | Divide the rand conversion amount by this rate. |
| Quote A recipient amount | USD 1,000.00 | R18,500 ÷ 18.50 from the shared budget. |
| Quote B transfer fee | R100 | Leaves R18,650 to convert from the shared budget. |
| Quote B rate | 18.60 ZAR per USD | Use the same quote timing and rate units as Quote A. |
| Quote B recipient amount | USD 1,002.69 | R18,650 ÷ 18.60, rounded. This is the fixed-budget result. |
| Recipient target | USD 1,000 | Start a separate fixed-recipient-amount comparison here. |
| Quote A debit for target | R18,750 | USD 1,000 × 18.50, plus R250. |
| Quote B debit for target | R18,700 | USD 1,000 × 18.60, plus R100. |
| Difference for same target | R50 | Quote B requires R50 less for this target under these assumptions. |
Common questions
- Is the lowest advertised exchange rate always the lowest total cost?
- No. Check the direction and units of the rate, the separate fees and the recipient amount. In the fixed-budget example, the lower rand-per-dollar rate delivers fewer dollars because the separate fee is higher.
- Can I compare a quote from yesterday with one from today?
- The difference can include market movement as well as provider pricing. Request equivalent quotes at a similar time and check when each rate expires.
- Does FX Fee Finder choose the cheapest transfer provider?
- No. The public checker estimates costs from a completed ZAR payment. These synthetic comparisons explain a method and are not current provider quotes, rankings or a promised saving.
